Sunshine Coast-based racehorse trainer Sheila Laxon is the first woman to win two Melbourne Cups.
Her horse, rank outsider, Knight’s Choice stormed home to win yesterday’s Cup by a nose.
She won the Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double with Ethereal in 2001.
Speaking to Track Side after the race she was full of praise for jockey Robbie Dolan who moved to Australia eight years ago to pursue a singing career.
“The ride was just so spot on. He just knew what he had under him and let him relax and then he got busy on him and he just kept finding and finding and finding,” Ms Laxon said.
“I knew he was going to win when he was halfway up the straight because you could see that it was going to unfold like that,” she said.
Knight’s Choice is the first Australian horse to win the Cup since Vow and Declare in 2019.
Vow and Declare is part-owned by Gympie’s Bob Leitch.
