Sunshine Coast residents are encouraged to make a little bonus Christmas cash.

It’s the peak time for people to trade in their empties for 10 cents a piece through the Containers for Change program.

In the lead up to last Christmas Sunshine Coast locals dropped off 3.7 million containers and that’s expected to be topped this year.

The organisation’s Sam Nicholson says there are still plenty of old bottles going to waste.

“Every year since the scheme started we’ve actually had more than 1.1 billion containers still going missing from being returned. That’s around $110 million that’s up for grabs for locals out there to cash in.”

Ms Nicholson recommends downloading the Containers for Change app so see which products are included.

The program includes a scanner.

“You just hold that over your barcode of your container and it will tell you if it’s eligible or not. As a general guide most beer, water, soft drink, juice poppers and smaller flavoured milks are always eligible for 10 cent refunds.”
