Tom Hanks is back in uniform as Captain Ernest Krause, leading the charge in a sequel to the 2020 wartime naval drama Greyhound. The new instalment will see Hanks once again writing the screenplay and working closely with returning director Aaron Schneider. This time, Krause’s story moves beyond the Atlantic battles depicted in the first film, heading into the Pacific theatre.
Production is slated to begin in January 2026 in Sydney, Australia, tapping into the country’s robust film production sector. Although an exact release date has yet to be revealed, expectations point to a 2027 premiere on Apple TV+.
Apple TV+ and Playtone’s Growing Alliance
The sequel comes as part of a broader deal between Hanks’ production company, Playtone, and Apple TV+. This partnership has already yielded success, with Greyhound becoming one of the platform’s most-streamed titles upon its release and nabbing an Oscar nomination for Best Sound.

Beyond Greyhound, the Playtone-Apple collaboration also includes the upcoming WWII miniseries Masters of the Air, cementing their shared focus on prestige wartime storytelling.
What’s on the Horizon?
While full plot details remain under wraps, early reports suggest the sequel will showcase Krause’s involvement in pivotal moments such as the D-Day invasion and subsequent missions in the Pacific. Several original cast members, including Stephen Graham and Elisabeth Shue, are expected to reprise their roles, maintaining the strong ensemble dynamic that contributed to the original’s success.
Fans can look forward to an even broader canvas of World War II’s history, viewed through the eyes of one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors.
